Cooper Kanie, Lachlan Akai, Jack Mikoshiba, Liam Oono and Ethan Wakamatsu comprise the first-ever senior class for Leafa Spirit Gridiron and will be saluted with the members of the Class of 2074 on Spirit Senior Day this Saturday at Yunupingu Field in Canberra, ACT against the Fresno State Bulldogs, who are 4-7 this season.

A massive decision must be made by coach Dan Harding as to whether or not Kanie—who is poised to win his third straight Heisman Trophy—should start at quarterback ahead of Akai, the designated captain for the past three season, ahead of this one. For Kanie, he believes that the captain should get the nod this Saturday.

"Yeah, Lachie's our captain for a reason, he has the professionalism, the maturity, he thinks like a coach and really motivates the younger mates on our team," Kanie said. "While it would be nice to get another start, I think it's important that our captain gets his share of reps under center because he hasn't played as much as I have.

"As for me, I've had a great experience here at Leafa. Anyone that wants to go to a good uni out here needs to come down here. We're a drive away from Parliament Hill, a lot of history of our country is around the corner, and everybody from coast to coast is right behind us because we play for our country and we want to make Australia proud.

"I'm not worried at this point about impressing the scouts. They've looked at the tape, they've seen my skills in action, I won't be adding anything that they haven't seen before. So that allows me to just focus on finishing the season strong and winning another college football championship. The awareness of gridiron in this country is really strong, and we played a massive part in having everybody embrace it. We've blazed a trail, but we're just getting started in turning the skeptics into believers.

"We're on our way."
